A Meditation on Life: Civilization

Even a casual survey of my [developed world] circumstances shows that I have inherited an enormous treasure chest…

… of healing medicines, labor-saving technologies, inspiring books, political freedoms, and opportunities to do my homework.

So many gifts… safe drinking water, electricity, automobiles, X-rays, anesthesia, air conditioning, corrective lenses, pre-school, airplanes, literacy, antibiotics, word processors, anti-histamines, libraries, and weather satellites… to name but a few.

I would never refuse to enjoy and employ these freedoms, comforts, and conveniences…

… but to what end I am compelled to ask.
