Obedience and conformity are submission of the worst kind… a one-two punch of popular evils that are nothing more than servitude, abdication, and cowardice spun into “virtues”.
Devotion to an ideal… to something greater than myself… is submission of the right kind… with the power to rally the bona fide virtues… compassion, honesty, integrity, gratitude, perseverance, and courage… in its service.
Submission of the right kind is neither the sin of pride nor an act of self-denial. Quite the contrary, it celebrates, animates, and demands the very best of me.
The challenge, of course, is that “the simplest thing”… submission to my own sense of right and wrong… may be the hardest leap of all.
