A Meditation on Faith: Conspiracy Theory

It’s criminal enough that we are fed a daily dose of nonsense and outright lies by the preachers, politicians, and other snake oil salesmen.

But even worse is our complicity in the whole racket… fueled by our desire for comfort, ease, and avoidance of responsibility… by our eagerness to justify our ignorance, apathy, prejudice, cowardice, and hypocrisy… all enabled by our skill at self-deception, rationalization, pretense, and denial.

And so, until we stop lying to ourselves it is we “the faithful”, not they “the authorities”, who are most responsible for perpetuating the fraud.

  1. On the money Frank, but how do you get people to break out of this? It’s like trying to raise your IQ by reading comic books, watching sitcoms and reading people magazine. Everyone is caught between entertainment and what they think they already know with a shallow barometer on wellness.

    • So very frustrating indeed, Jim, and fraught with so many tangled chicken and egg problems. Every time I reflect on how to break so many cycles of ignorance, I always return to the same conclusion: Those of us who know better must do better… speaking the truth, challenging the bs, raising our kids with love and logic, being of service, being a living example of our most deeply held values.

  2. Good, I agree that “And so, until we stop lying to ourselves it is we “the faithful”, not they “the authorities”, who are most responsible for perpetuating the fraud.”

But has there ever been a time or civilization when people were not lying to themselves?

    • Agreed… not a new disease… and THAT is part of the problem… as most of us are born as innocent children who trust our elders with our lives… how could people who are supposed to love me fill my impressionable heart and mind with such nonsense? All feeding so many trans-generational cycles of insanity. Thanks and peace.
