Coming Out: Seek and Ye Shall Find

Having audaciously declared my free agency in an impossible universe, I am not so conceited to think that I can navigate the mystery all alone.

Surely there is something true and useful to learn from billions of experienced souls, past and present.

And so, armed with a humble curiosity, I spent decades seeking knowledge and wisdom from every source I could find… sacred and secular… conservative and liberal… male and female… ancient and contemporary… popular and not.

I devoured the library, surveyed the mainstream religions, absorbed the sciences hard and soft, and ventured to foreign lands.

Along the way, I made four empowering discoveries:

First, most humans are profoundly perplexed about the meaning of life.

Second, there is no consensus on why we are here.

Third, nobody else, no matter how clever or wise, can tell me the meaning of my life.

Fourth, there are some rare and precious souls… both famous and obscure… with the conviction and courage to say and do what others are afraid to say and do. They are the real prophets… those who illuminate the meaning of life not by their professions but by their exemplary actions.

  1. When I believed a creator started all this, I didn’t wonder why. I thought that the rest is up to me (us) to finish the job. We could have some mighty fine jawbone sessions, Frank. We don’t need answers. We only need to question. We can live into the answers. Deep!

    • I resonate deeply with the idea of questioning liberally, then living into the answers. Wonder, not certainty, is the the parent of progress. Hopefully someday we can have one of those might fine jawboned sessions. Cheers, Bill!

  2. You are correct: no one can tell you the meaning of your life… or mine. For me the meaning of my life evolves from my experiences and whatever knowledge I garnered from those. The meaning of life is a permanent quest or quests through and beyond time and space, spinning the dice so the future becomes past, the past can be the future, until new paths appear requiring new approaches and new ways to navigate. The meaning of life is being alive and living it knowingly, fearlessly.
