Getting There: Ferry from Tarifa Spain to Tangier

A Quick Lesson in Arabic Pleasantries
Head up: “La Shokran” is indispensable for politely dealing with the sometimes aggressive touts in Tangier.

Tangier (Tangiers)
A one-hour ferry ride across the Strait of Gibraltar will transport you to another universe and take you back in time.

Score a fistful of Dirham, polish up a few French and Arabic pleasantries, and check all your preconceptions about Africa and Islam at the door.

Roam the tangled alleyways, expect sincere and curious smiles wherever you go, but brace yourself for the assertive-aggressive merchants who relentlessly attempt to charm you out of your money.

Marrakesh (Marrakech)
Take the “Marrakesh Express” from Tangier (a delightful overnight sleeper with stories better saved for another time)…
Upon arrival in Marrakesh grab a taxi, score some more Dirhams, learn a few more French and Arabic pleasantries, then roam the souk in search of a room…

Djemaa El-Fnaa
If I could take you anywhere in the world for only one day, that place, hands down, would be the enormous and indescribably vibrant, pulsating square called Djemaa El-Fnaa. It’s like a hundred ring circus… with food, games, dentists, jugglers, storytellers, dancers, musicians, and snake charmers… but with a twist: You are not merely at the circus; You are in the circus!

Argana Cafe Bombing
A stark reminder of a divided and dangerous world. The terrorist attack of the Argana Cafe happened less than two weeks after I left. (Although I never ate there, I walked right past this restaurant multiple times every day during my visit).
