Frida Kahlo Returns to Remind and Inspire

I fully expected that my visit to Zagreb in the Spring of 2014 would eventually fall into the “nice place to visit once” category…

… but you never know where and when you might be graced with a special gift that will change you forever…

In the main square, while searching for a comfortable place to chill and score some ćevapi and beer, I spotted two very interesting young ladies enthusiastically focused on their task…

One lady photographed from various perspectives as the other assumed a variety of poses and expressions from innocent to playful to shocked to mockingly serious…

At the first break in the action, I could not help but approach them and ask about their project.

To my delight, both of them (Vesna the photographer and Damajanti the model) spoke fluent and delightful English and were thrilled that someone showed an interest in their work…

It turns out that they were doing a shoot for a photography contest that promotes literacy and education…

But that’s not all.

As you can see from the title of the book that Dami is holding, they were also making a positive statement for tolerance and inclusion regarding sexual orientation–no small feat in broad daylight in the main city square in conservative Catholic Croatia…

Thank you, Vesna and Dami, for making me a better human being–through your uncommon conviction and courage, for the gift of hope for this damaged world, and for inspiring me ever since to turn my rants and laments into meaningful action.

And this was a gift that would keep on giving, as there was yet another surprise to come. Before we said goodbye, Vesna invited me, with no further explanation, to join her for a “dance workshop” the very next morning: Let’s Dance!

    1. Indeed, Stella. My freedom to travel has privileged me with meeting so many inspiring people that have absolutely transformed my life. Thanks & Peace.

  1. … And, y’old codger, you got your arms around two luscious laydeez, just to frost the cake! Complete with flowers… Lookathat smile! 😊👌

    1. Thanks, Gerald… I wonder, though, if I’ve failed to convey how much courage it took these ladies to do what they did in broad daylight in the main square.

      1. I understood the significance of their action, Frank, though I was also taken by the photos and the book. I hope no harm has come to them.
