Coming Out Human: Property Rights

Nothing really belongs to you…

NOTHING.

Not your stuff, not your money, not your health, not your talents, not your titles, not your accomplishments, not your family and friends.

Even your own body does not belong to you and will eventually abandon you against your will.

So, when you use the word “my”, let it be a declaration of profound stewardship, not mere possession.

  1. I suppose existence is but a revolving door for a here-today-gone-tomorrow species. We’re all just here – some malingering, others climbing mountains – borrowing oxygen, parasites, until we commit ourselves back to the earth from which we stole. But Frank, I have to draw the line at my Cannondale road bike. It’s my goddamn bike! 🚵

  2. Agreed. We talk a lot about rights and not much about responsibility. My father used to say that to me all the time. He was correct.

  3. Perfect observation, Frank. Some symphony conductors talk of how they “serve” the composers whose music they play. At the end of his life, Bruno Walter said that his position would be a small place on a pedestal devoted to them. But, as you might say, at the end of the world nothing will remain, neither Walter nor Beethoven.

    1. Thanks for the nice additions on servant leadership and utter temporariness of things, Gerald. A toast to doing our level best to use our gifts in service others in this infinitely wee sliver of eternity.
