Coming Out Human: The Nature Nurture Debate

If scientists could unravel and decode every strand of my DNA…

… and tally every reward I enjoyed and every punishment I endured growing up, would my life’s trajectory come as an intriguing (and pleasant) surprise to them?

I sure hope so.

  1. As usual, proponents of either swear only one side is “da Truth”.
And as usual, we’re just a bit of both. (And maybe a third non-identified part?)

    1. My inclination is that both matter far more than anyone dares to admit, but… As you can see, I leave to door wide open to a freedom beyond determinism. Cheers!

      1. True. A well-known phenomenon in psychology is repetition: how one repeats what our parents did, even if that was abuse. Or systematically do the opposite of what people we’ve known did. (Which is a counter-repetition.) But in the end, any one of us has the choice. The choice to (not)follow. The choice for good or the choice for evil. The choice to whine and the choice to forge ahead…
There is only as much determinism as we allow for it.

        1. As you know from my other writings I’m living my life as if what you say is true… for me. Importantly, I speak only for me.
