Finding My Religion: Mother Nature

If, by some miracle, all the world’s religions became one, peace and freedom erupted everywhere, and man-made cruelty vanished forever…

Life would still be hard.

Our frail bodies would still be at the mercy of genetic mutations, disabilities, deformities, microbes, venoms, parasites, predators, solar radiation, the weather, and tectonic upheavals… to name but a few.

Is this not reason enough to unite us all in common cause against our real enemies, namely the countless horrors of “God’s perfect creation”.

  1. My mother who did not believe in God once said “If God exists, he’s in jail.” (I wrote a story about that. In Spanish. I’m working on the translation. Will post.)
    Cheers

  2. Though these times feel quite grim, Frank, and we certainly have a lot of work to do, there’s always hope if we prevent ourselves from lapsing into cynicism and despair. (I’m working on my “It’s always darkest before the dawn” scenario.)

    1. While I allow the pessimist in me and optimist in me to keep each other honest, the optimist in me always wins in the end. Have no fear, Annie… Rest assured that my optimism is not some inert hope, but a radical activism. And my spirits are always buoyed by decent and generous people like you. And we are not alone, as evidenced by recent events in Hungary. Keep on keepin’ on!

  3. It would be more than nice, Frank. Part of our current dilemma is that trust has been eroded. The UN is wobbly, the US is wobbly, and families are fighting with each other over politics, etc. Not an encouraging development.

    1. As you say, Gerald, lack of trust has severed our natural human connections at many levels. Alas, we still have lots of work to do in the name of reason and decency.

    1. Alas, blind belief continues to stifle real moral and scientific progress everywhere, not to mention the violence it encourages at the industrial scale. Thanks for being here, man.
